O God, who knows infinitely more than I,
who am I to say what is possible
and what is impossible?
I confess that my metrics measure only
what I think is reasonable, who I believe is worthy, and
how I think my story ought to go.
And when I gauge my qualifications,
I’m tempted to believe
that I’m indispensable or
that my unlikeliness disqualifies me.
Neither is true.
So teach me true humility, O God,
and let me not continue in a distrust of you
that masquerades as modesty.
May I surrender all that makes me seem likely to succeed and all that renders me unlikely,
offering each to your service, Lord.
